History of Blekko

blekkoBlekko was founded in 2007 with the goal of revitalizing the way that search engines work. Over the next three years the founders raised approximately $24 million in capital funds, which they then invested into building Blekko’s infrastructure. On November 1, 2010, Blekko.com was officially launched, bringing with it a new way to search the web.

Building on the success of innovations such as Twitter’s hashtags, Blekko operates in a slightly different way than its competitors; instead of merely typing in a basic search term, although this option is still available, Blekko users are encouraged to type a slash before their search. This filters the results in a way which includes content from trusted websites. Editors and registered users can create new slashtags on a wide variety of topics. Slashtags are typically kept to one word but in some instances two words can be used as long they are formatted correctly, such as /book-reviews.

Slashtag sorted search results provide users with easily accessible data about each site contained within the search results, including each sites’ search engine rank and search engine optimization data. Blekko released a web search bill of rights upon the site’s initial launch and the incorporation of this type of data was listed among its guidelines. In order to access this information, however, users must first register with Blekko.com.

Blekko.com hasn’t yet achieved a level of popularity that is anywhere near Google’s, but some Internet experts theorize that Blekko’s revolutionary search techniques may eventually lead it to compete head to head against the Internet search engine giant. It remains to be seen if a more customized level of searching will win out against the change of adding a slashtag before all search terms.
